Paralympics

I have been learning to find key words and put them in a sentience, find information and put  it into my own words and reread my report every time I come back to it. I asked lots of questions learning about the Paralympics. My first question was how long has the Paralympics been around? The answer is since 1952. To research about the Paralympics I read lots of books and I was always figuring out the answer to my questions I watched a couple of videos and learnt how to play most
 Paralympic games.

Here is some info about the Paralympic sport

There are around 31 Paralympics sports. 29 are currently Paralympic sports - (winter and summer). 23 of the sports are in the summer Paralympics and 6 are in the winter Paralympics there are many Paralympics sports like; Curling, Athletics, Alpine Skiing. Most of these spots have similar  rules to the version in the Olympics. Boccie, wheelchair Ruby and Goalball require lots of movement. Every country in the world is aiming to be the best at their sport by going to the Olympics or Paralympics and winning a gold medal. In the winter Paralympics most of the sports are played on the snow.

There are lots of sports in the Paralympics like;

Summer sports are Archery,  Athletics,  Boccie, Equestrian, Goalball, Judo, Power lifting, Rowing, Sailing, Shooting, Swimming, Table tennis, Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Rugby, Wheelchair Tennis,

Winter sports are alpine skiing. Cross country skiing, snowboarding, wheelchair curling, ice sledge hockey.
For my artifact I made a pamphlet with a stand saying read about the Paralympics and it had a teddy bear with a Paralympics T-shirt

Here is my pamphlet

The Paralympics is like the Olympics were you go compete against other athletes to  see who's best at the sport. But at the Paralympics, instead of going to the Olympics you go to the Paralympics  only if you have a  different ability. Say if I had a case  of dwarfism and I went to the Olympics for sprinting my legs would be really small against all the other athletes how am I going to win that? You would go to the Paralympics and race against other athlete that have the same level of ability.
Symbol
The Paralympics symbol is not the same as the Olympic rings
Image result for olympic ring colours
Image result for paralympic logo colours this is the Paralympic symbol

The Paralympic symbol changed 9 years ago because it was too similar to the olympic rings   Image result for paralympic logo colours   this is the old Paralympic symbol. The Paralympic symbol is made up of three agito (agitos are the crescent moon shapes on the symbol) T he meaning for the Paralympics agitos is always moving forward and never giving up.

Medals
The medals in the Olympics and the Paralympics are different the only thing that is the same is the color bronze, silver and gold the Paralympics medals have little steel balls inside so if the Athlete is blind they can here which medal they earned instead of see. The bronze medal has 16 bells silver has 20 and gold has 28 which ever medal makes the loudest sound will tell them which medal they earned. On the medal it says RIO OLYMPICS 2016 under that in braille it says the same braille is when the writing is made out of little dots so the Athlete can feel what it says.

What is Boccia

Boccia was introduced to the Paralympics in 1984. Boccia is played in wheelchairs on a cort around 12.5m by 6m.leather is what the balls are made out of. The balls are about the size of a tennis ball but slightly larger. The balls can be rolled thrown or kicked or released down a ramp. Athletes that can not do any of these things get to wear a headband with something like a stick attached to the headband and you can push the ball down the ramp with the sick. Sometimes they will put the stick in there mouth instead. Only 6 players can play at a time. Each of them has there own special box (in the ground marked with tap.) They have to stay in the box while rolling the ball they have to roll the ball to a special ball called the Jack the Jack is a different color to all the balls it is white. The other balls are red and blue how ever gets the ball closest to the Jack wins. Boccia is a sport where both men and women compete against each other.

Sprinting

To be able to compete in the running race you need to have an amputated leg or a multi sclerosis or dwarfism
sprinting takes lots of practice to be good at it. If the athlete has an amputated leg how do they run? They use a pretend leg that swings along with them every step they take. Some people might like to call it a robot leg and some people have blades  on there legs attached to their feet. They also do sprinting races in wheelchairs the athletes need really strong arms to compete in wheelchairs.

Wheelchair tennis

112 competitors compete in wheelchair tennis. When the other player has the ball and they wahk it towards you it is allowed to bounce 2 times on your side there is a net above the middle of the court when you are whacking the ball it has to go high enough to go over the net if it crashes into the net the other athlete gets a point. If the athlete you are versing hits it to you and you don’t hit it back the other athlete gets a point.

Goalball

Goalball is designed for blind people how can only see a little bit or who can’t see at all. To play goalball there needs to be two teams with 3 players on each side the game is played in a gum stadium on the floor the lines are pretty much the same as the lines on a soccer field. When you have the ball you need to roll it to the opposition's side and try and score a goal in it is simple  to score a goal because the goals go write across the stadium. this game is similar to soccer but instead of using your feet you use your hands. The ball is made out of hard rubber with holes in it, in the holes there are bells so that the other team knows that the ball is coming and they know to stop it from going in the goal.

Curling

Curling is for Athletes that are in wheelchairs. There are 2 teams each team needs to have
A mix of boys and girls. This sport can be played in more than 24 different countries the players hold a stick similar to a hockey stick and they need to whack the ball (in the ground there are marking but instead of hanging up on a wall they are in the ground) and whichever marking it lands on will tell you what score you get.

Who can participate in the para-sport

Only Athletes with eligible health condition can compete in the Para-sport Also these disabilities can participate in the Paralympics they are; spinal cord injuries, amputated limbs, blindness cerebral palsy, intellectual disabilities and multiple sclerosis or dwarfism. If you want to go to the Paralympics you need to go get tested to know which sport  you can play in and who can play which sport against who.

perspective art

We are learning about perspective, perspective is when something is really big in front of you but if you walk further away and look behind you it is really small. In class we did some art  to show perspective. In this art the road is the main part of perspective because the further away it gets the thinner it is.

We drew a road shaped as a  triangle disappearing in the dictince (distance). With trees all along the side and under the trees there is some long orange, brown and yellow flax placed at the bottom of the tree and up in the sky there are seven stars for Matariki. To create it I used  pastelsfor the sky I used 4 different blues. Something I found challenging was making the stars look like stars because it was hard to make them the right size and because it was hard to make the line straight and like 3D.

Something I really liked about my art is the trees along the side of the road and how they are different coulers (colours).

Hansel and Gretel

We are learning to retell a story but in our own words otherwise that will be stealing there ideas. Next time I think I would add some more paragraphs to split it up into bits so the reader can read it peace piece by piece . Something that changed me was completing all my feed back and reaching my goals
to strive to keep my learning to it's personal best. I am proud of the vocabulary I have used. Something else that challenged me was punting my full stops in the right places and using my punctuation so the reader can take breaths while reading.

Here is my writing

Hansel
and Gretel

Long long ago on a tiny lost island there was a little cottage with mushrooms surrounding it and native flowers outside the door with a forest next door. A pair of twins lived in the cottage with there nice kind hearted  father the twins names were Hansel and Gretel. Sadly they had a evil stepmother with a large wart on the end of her nose her nose was also a  bundle of hair that looked like a bird nest. A pin going frew her hair to curl it around. There father was a woodcutter he tried to sell wood so he called get money because there family was very poor they only had little to eat all day hansel and gretel got bossed around by their dreadful mother they HAD to do jobs all day as for the mother as you can guess just sat around watching THEM do all the work well she ate all the food they had. One day they only had one speak of bread left  so the the next night when the children went to bed the mother grabbed the father by the shirt and for the first time she QUIETLY told the father “tomorrow we get a picnic set up and take our children for a walk in the haunted  spoke forest next door.

Because we only have little of food left then we will leave them there
And sneak back home without them knowing.” Hansel and where sitting in the doorway of there bedroom Gretel started to sob “well that's the end of us she sobbed Hansel had a clever bran and a great idea he snuck on to the back lawn there in front of him was tons of glistening pebbles he shoved the pebbles in his pockets and ran back inside early in the morning there mother came in and tugged them out of bed well yelling “Get up you lazy eggs we are going on a FUN picnic so get outside with your father ready to walk,”

Well waiting for the mother the father gave his children a big squez. Finally the mother skipped out the door laughing an evil laugh well they were walking on the path they sore holo(hollow) trees looming over their heads. Every step the branches creaked open the forest was a place no child should be left they kept walking until the children fell to the ground because they were so tied they rested by a tree and got given a piece of bread each once they had drifted off to sleep their parents slipped into the bushes and disappeared. When the children awok they found them selfe(themselves) alone in the middle of a deep dark forest  Hansel sprung to his feet and bravely said I have a plane(plan) as they walked down the path he whispered what he had done they happily ran down the path skipping over the pebbles one by one. Once they reached the cottage sneakily they crawled around the back of the cottage and into the their bedroom window. The next morning their mother came into the room wearing a ragged cleaning clock(cloak) straed about to move around the room where she keeps all the spear wood

When she sore(saw) the children she got so frustrated steam puffed out of her ears as she screamed “I THOURT I LEFT YOU ALONE IN THE FOREST TO STARVE TO DEF(DEATH),” The very next morning there mum dragged them by the are outside ready for another walk but deeper into the forest this time clever Hansel didn’t have a enough time to grab pebbles so he used the ones from the day before and well they were walking he picked some up from the other day this time the mother discovered there secret plane(plan) and kicked the pebbles away.

Once again their parents slipped away into the bushes Hansel and Gretel did not notice they had gone awhile after they came upon the most amazing thing they had ever seen. A GINORMOUS GINGERBREAD HOUSE. That had sweets all over it. For flowers it had lollipops and candy canes for the walls there were
piklets and waffles the grass was made with cakes the windows were icing and the roof was smores the entire house was edible strate(straight) away they were munching on the walls the widows and the flowers suddenly they heard an old croaky voice say “How's(who's) munching on my house” and out came a wrinkly old lady she invited them in gave the some tea and ice cream once they had finished they thanked the witch and started to walk out of the cottage but the witch flew past on her magic broomstick and yelled you're not going anywhere she scooped them up and wizzed them back inside she shoved Hansel in a cage and said you're nothing but a pile of skinny bones time to fatten you up and eat you little brats that eats someone's house gets eaten and as for you little mrs pink you're going to do all my chorus.

The witch had very bad eyesight and each day when the she came to see how fat Hansel was getting he was told to stick out his finger so the witch could see how fat he was getting but he was getting pretty fat indeed but when the witch asked him to poked out his finger he poked out a chicken bone from one of his melas the witch finally said I have had enough we're going to have roasted boy for dinner no matter how fat he is she asked Gretal to light the fire ready for the feast as Gretale lit the fire she started to sob.

The witch bent down to see if the fire was settling in as she did Gretel gave her a huge push and slammed the door to the oven now they were having roasted witch for dinner she found the key to the cage on the bench
And rushed over to her brother she fiddled around trying to undo it then eventually managed before they left they ate her house and robbed all her gold and they ran in the forest all week finding the right path home they chose wisely wich path they took finally they arrived home they saw their father sitting on the stairs into there house they ran up to him and gave him a big hug the dad happily said your back I got rid of that cruel mum of yours and now we can shear the little of food we have. Hansel and Gretel grinned at each other and chucked the money and gold into the air they moved into a bigger house and have lived happily ever after for the rest of their lives.

Matariki Week

 MATARIKI

We are learning about Matariki. Matariki is a time for family, fun and happiness.
What Matariki means is the seven sisters the seven sisters are seven stars that only come out at
this time of year. Together all the stars in the sky are called a constellation.
The sisters are easy to spot just before dawn. Matariki is the celebration of the Maori new year. There are seven stars there names are Uru-a-rangi,   Tupu-a-nuku,   Mataiki,   Tupu-a-rangi , Waipuna-a-rangi,  Waia and  Waita. The youngest is Uru-a-rangi. Maori sailors use the stars to direct them the right way.

For Matariki week a group of kids from our hub painted a  mural. I got to paint the mural I designed for Matariki. One of the learning muscle I used was my planing muscle to plan the way my composition looked. The mural had to have something in it that represented Parkvale school. In my design there is the seven stars in the sky  tmata-peak(Te Mata) with the giant lying on top then there are 5 trees for the 5 house Kea  green Pukeko red Hoiho yellow Tui blake Takake blue. Next there is s waka with lots of children on it and a river with kuros in it.

   This is my plan

HOW TO FIND A GEOCACHE

HOW TO FIND A GEOCACHE

Are you bored and have to play outside with nothing to do? Well I know exactly what to do find your first geocache it’s fun and easy!
Equipment
  • Phone or gps (A gps is like a phone that tells you coordinates.
  • Maybe some trads for swapping toys (trads are toys)
  • maybe you might chose to have a bag with lots of spare equipment like a pair of tweezers, or if you have found over 100 then you might want to have some spare geocaches in case you find a good hiding place.
1.  Go to your app store and writ in geocaching and there will be an geocaching app or you can type geocaching
on your device and there will be lots of apps click the top one there will be a video you can watch and under that there is a box called geocaching premium write everything in there it tells you to.

2. Click your phone and a map should appear on your screen and you can click on one of the dot's and follow the compass and set off to go find your first geocache.
3. Steps to find your first geocache
Find where it says hint that will give you a clue to where the geocache is some times it will say look at tittel.(a shorter word for geocache is cache) they can be any shapes and sizes some might be in a tree branch or a piece of bark sometimes you can find one that's bigger than you. A rule about caching is if you take a toy from a cache you have to swop one. If you're hiding one you're not allowed to bury them because we don’t want people
going digging holes everywhere! Cachs can even be a fake post or screw. Cachs can take you to amazing places you have never been before like exciting bush walks or an outstanding parks it can take you on magnificent holiday some cachs have fun things that you
need to dig your hands through. Most cachs tell you in the description how big it is. So stop dozing and start caching.

Map of geocaches on the Geocaching iPhone appthis is similar picture what your phone will look like

with the map on it.

We are learning to write a story about something that were good at that we can shear (share) with others mine is how to find a geocache. Give it a go! I put lots of detale(detail) into it so more people can start caching. Next time
I think I'm going to start more sentences with verbs because I found this tricky.

Science writing

We are learning about bread there are lots of different kinds of bread like white bread and seed bread (did you know white bead has more sugar then other bread). Cooked  bread is called toast. Toast is a yum breakfast. My favorite bread is home made bread. Enjoy my scrumptious bread.

I woke up in the morning and searched around for a bag of bread. In the cupboard I found lots of ingredients for yummy food. Time to do some bread cooking. I wonder what you need to cook bread.  Did you know Yeast helps the bread rise? One of the most important ingredients is flour.

Have you ever made bread before?

Ingredients
1 ⅓ cup of flour
1 Tbsp sugar
1 teaspoon of yeast
½ cup warm water not hot
1 tsp oil

Method
1 Blend the flour, sugar and yeast together in a bowl.

2  Pour in the oil and the water stir for one minute.

3 Check if your dough is sticky ( if not sticky add a bit more water.)

4 Combine for 5 minutes.
5 Spray the bench with cooking spray and flatten the dough on the bench.

6 Knead the dough firmly until it is smooth (don’t over knead.)

7 Shape the dough into a fun shape so it’s ready to go into the oven.

8 Cover with towel for 25 minutes to let it rise.

9 Preheat the oven  to 175 degrees.

10 Bake for 25 minutes or until the dough is golden.

It is inportent (important) to add yest unless you wan't your bread to be flat because yeast helps bread rise.
(this is delicious bread)
Have you ever made bread?

perimeter

I am proud of my learning because I learnt lots of new things.
Totara Whanau are learning about perimeter. Perimeter is the out side of a shape. What we are doing is drawing a rectangle then picking a number for the bottom and the top of the rectangle then picking a number for the tow sides. For the top and bottom for example:

I might put 467 and for the sides I might put 45 then we had to add the numbers up but I had to show my thinking because the teachers are clever but they can't see inside your head. We also did something called the splits when we split the  numbers into the hundreds tens and ones. Next time I think I could try adding up bigger numbers.
